In the constant pursuit of excellence, nature always holds in reserve the most extraordinary materials. Elements that, due to their rarity and complexity, demand the intervention of master craftspeople and an absolute devotion to detail. One such treasure, jealously guarded in the history of design and cabinetmaking, is shagreen.
Touching the surface of this material is an experience in itself. A pearlescent, resistant, and enigmatic texture that has seduced dynasties, revolutionized European courts, and, today, defines the spaces of those who understand true sophistication.
1. LEGENDARY ORIGINS
Before adorning the most exclusive interiors of the modern world, shagreen had a purpose rooted in honor and extreme functionality. In samurai Japan, this material was discovered to possess unparalleled qualities.
Its destiny was to wrap the hilts of katanas, the tsuka. This choice was due to its unmistakable texture, formed by thousands of calcium nodules that guaranteed a firm and unyielding grip in combat. A legendary material, endowed with remarkable strength superior to traditional leather.

2. THE BIRTH OF GALUCHAT
The consecration of this leather in European circles of exquisite taste took place in 18th-century France. At the court of Louis XV, this exotic element captivated royalty, elevated by the visionary eye and refinement of Madame de Pompadour.
The creator of this milestone was Jean-Claude Galuchat, a master tanner who managed to master the complex art of treating and dyeing an untamable leather. The tiny calcium nodules are so hard that, historically, they broke the tools of artisans. Its manipulation requires inexhaustible patience and prodigious technique.

3. AESTHETIC CONSECRATION: ART DÉCO
During the 1920s and 30s, interior design underwent a revolution of pure lines and superb materials. Design visionaries rediscovered shagreen, expanding its use beyond small objects to integrate it organically into large-scale fine cabinetry.
Anatomically, this material hides a captivating rarity. At the center of the stingray's back lies the "crown" or "pearl": a distinctive diamond-shaped white mark where the nodules reach their fullest expression. This pearl acts as the immutable signature of the leather, ensuring that no two cuts are ever identical.

4. DEVOTION TO EXCELLENCE
At JoverValls, we carry on this rich tradition of meticulous craftsmanship. We believe that the line separating design from artwork lies in those imperceptible details from a distance, yet profoundly transform the everyday experience.
We use shagreen for the hardware of our collections as a declaration of intent. The handle represents the subtle threshold between the work and its owner; it is the first contact, the physical greeting that anticipates the solidity of the furniture. Beauty is not limited to visual contemplation, but is lived, felt, and endures in the memory of the hands.

PERMANENCE IN EVERY DETAIL
The nobility of shagreen (Galuchat) combined with precision engineering. Hardware designed to elevate residential and contract interior design projects to the highest level.
